Nick Saban Named Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week

ATLANTA (October 17, 2016) – Officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl today announced that Alabama Head Football Coach Nick Saban has been selected as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week.

The Dodd Coach of the Week Award honors the football coach whose program embodies the award’s three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity, while also having success on the playing field during the previous week.

“Under Coach Saban’s leadership, Alabama football has become one of the most consistent and successful programs in the country during the past decade,” said Jim Terry, Chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. “After this weekend’s convincing victory over No. 9 Tennessee, Coach Saban has once again put his team in a position to compete for an SEC and National Championship. With his success, both on and off the field, as well as his community and charitable work, you can see why Coach Saban was an easy pick for this week.”

Alabama traveled to Knoxville to take on No. 9 Tennessee in a matchup of two long-time rivals. The Crimson Tide took an early 14-0 lead and never looked back. Alabama outgained Tennessee by more than 400 total yards, including an impressive 438-32 advantage on the ground. The Crimson Tide scored touchdowns on every side of the ball, adding an interception and punt return for scores. Alabama improves to 7-0 on the year and 4-0 in the SEC.

Coach Saban, the 2014 Dodd Trophy recipient, is fresh off his fifth national championship, joining former Crimson Tide coach Paul “Bear” Bryant as the only other coach to win five national titles in the modern era. His on-the-field success has been matched in the classroom as Alabama earned an impressive Academic Progress Rate score of 979 last year.

Along with his wife, Terry, the Sabans started the Nick’s Kids Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting children, family, teacher and student causes. To date, the Nick’s Kids Foundation has distributed more than $6 million to more than 150 charities. Additionally, Nick and Terry Saban have personally donated more than $1 million to the First Generation Scholarship at the University of Alabama.

“The Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl is proud to honor Coach Saban after another big win for the Alabama program,” said Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Chairman Percy Vaughn. “As a previous winner of this prestigious award, Coach Saban is certainly a deserving recipient of this honor and we look forward to seeing the Crimson Tide continue to succeed this season under his leadership.”

The Dodd Trophy presented by the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl – along with the Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week Award – celebrates the head coach of a FBS team who enjoys success on the gridiron, while also stressing the importance of scholarship, leadership and integrity.
