George Welsh’s head coaching career began at Navy in 1973. Welsh was hired at the University of Virginia in 1982 to help turn around a struggling program. Prior to Welsh’s arrival the Cavaliers had only had two winning season in the previous 29 years. Welsh quickly turned the program around and in 1984 the Cavaliers made their first ever bowl appearance. The 1987 season began a streak of 13 straight seasons with seven or more wins. His on and off the field success earned him ACC Coach of the Year nods four times (1983, 1984, 1991, and 1995) and he was named National Coach of the Year and Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year in 1991 after an undefeated home record and overall record of 8-3-1.
